From Diverse Paths to Digital Futures: How Step IT Up Transforms Careers and Lives
Career transitions are never easy, but for many, they can become defining turning points. The decision to pivot into technology was not just about learning new skills for these graduates. It was about reimagining what was possible, building confidence, and discovering new ways to create impact.
Take Kwek Xin Hui (Joe), who spent over a decade in the safety and facilities domain. A certified Workplace Safety and Health Officer and Fire Safety Manager, Joe had seen how even simple web tools could transform safety operations by reducing administrative workload and improving decision-making. His fascination with technology led him to Step IT Up, where the structured training, on-the-job experience and financial support gave him the confidence to blend his domain expertise with digital innovation. With encouragement from his family, he took the leap and has not looked back.
For Mohamed Yazid Bin Abdul Latif, the journey into tech started while working in Singapore’s leading telco. After five years in finance administration, he discovered Python programming during his part-time degree and soon moved into a business support role managing IT systems for customer service teams. But Yazid wanted to get closer to the code. Juggling a demanding job and life with four children, he relied on a strong family support system while pursuing his dream. Discovering Step IT Up felt like the breakthrough he had been waiting for, a chance to deepen his technical knowledge and step into a new environment that matched his passion.
Low Han Ren’s story highlights the spirit of adaptability. After running his own e-commerce packaging business for over three years, he transitioned into tech through Step IT Up. Entrepreneurship had already honed his problem-solving, client management and innovation skills, which translated seamlessly into his new world of low-code development. He credits the structured training and mentorship for building his confidence to not only learn but thrive in a completely new industry. For him, the shift was not just about changing careers but rediscovering resilience and embracing continuous growth.
Sometimes, career change comes through unexpected turns. Joshua Christian Nathanael, a graduate in Aerospace Engineering, worked in UAV flow research at NTU’s Air Traffic Management Research Institute. When his research contract ended, he recalled an email about the Step IT Up programme and decided to take the plunge. In 2025, Joshua joined the programme, where his background in computational modelling helped him quickly adapt to algorithmic thinking and low-code development. Alongside technical training, he gained soft skills in leadership and teamwork, equipping him with the stability and relevance he sought in today’s fast-changing landscape.
For Soh Jia Ying, the leap into tech came from a creative lens. With a background in design, she saw parallels between creating spaces and building software, both driven by the desire to make an impact. Step IT Up gave her the tools and confidence to channel her creativity into code. She found inspiration in the shared energy of peers from all walks of life, united by their hunger to learn. For Jia Ying, the programme was a reminder that with curiosity and openness to change, anyone can successfully step into the digital future.
Together, these stories paint a picture of transformation that goes beyond technical upskilling. Step IT Up isn’t just a pathway into tech, it is a catalyst for resilience, lifelong learning and unlocking human potential. Whether coming from safety, telecoms, entrepreneurship, research or design, each participant proves that with the right mindset and support, the leap into technology can open doors to meaningful, impactful futures.

Celebrating Transformation: From Personal Journeys to Singapore’s Digital Future
At the graduation ceremony, both KC Yeoh, Head, Enterprise Development, Portfolio Development Group & Deputy Head, Singapore Market, Temasek and Ng Lai Yee, our Chief Executive Officer, underscored the profound impact of people-led transformation, not just for Temus, but for Singapore’s future as a digital nation.
KC Yeoh opened by framing the graduates’ achievement within Singapore’s broader context. As the nation strives to triple its AI workforce under the National AI Strategy 2.0, programmes like Step IT Up play a vital role in closing the talent gap. He highlighted Temasek’s mission of building future capabilities and Temus’ unique role in transforming talent rather than simply building or buying it. The 17 graduates (“LowKeys”), embody this approach, bringing with them both diverse domain expertise and newly acquired low-code skills. KC called this “capability multiplication,” noting how their unique perspectives will strengthen Singapore’s competitiveness and innovation edge.
Ng Lai Yee built on this theme by spotlighting the human stories behind the transformation. From fresh graduates to mid-career professionals balancing family responsibilities, each graduate demonstrated resilience, agility, and courage. She celebrated the milestone of having the highest proportion of women graduates to date, affirming Temus’ support for diversity in tech. Looking forward, she announced new commitments: onboarding 100 Step IT Up hires by 2026 and launching a Direct Hires GenAI Training Programme for up to 45 new employees. Lai Yee emphasised that Temus’ strength comes from building capabilities “from the inside out” and equipping every employee with AI fluency, making them indispensable contributors to Singapore’s digital future.
